Go³-Project:

The Metamorphose of Go to Go³

1. Project – Theory:

The metamorphosis of the game of Go from the plane – two-dimensional 19x19 with 361 intersections –
into space – to the three-dimensional space grid structure of 7x7x7 rectangular intersecting axes with 343 intersections.
The circular stones become spheres in the space. On the Go board, the intersection is in the centre of the stone.
In the space grid, the intersection of the three space axes is in the centre of the sphere.

All rules of the game of Go remain unchanged, but a sphere which is put into the space grid has more liberties than a stone on the Go board.

Stone on the plane:
A: in the corner: 2 Liberties
B: on the edge: 3 Liberties
C: in the centre: 4 Liberties
Liberties Sphere in the Space::
A: in the corner: 3 Liberties
B: on the edge: 4 Liberties
C: on the surface: 5 Liberties
D: in the centre: 6 Liberties

The aim of the game – on the plane to enclose territories – becomes to enclose rooms/houses in space.
As well as on the plane chains/groups are created, in the three-dimensional space structures are created to build enclosed rooms.
To find a winner, at the end of the game captured spheres and enclosed rooms are counted and compared.
That means, the aim of Go3, to capture enemy stones/spheres and to enclose territories/rooms stays the same as in „normal“ Go.
The target of this project Go3 was not to create a new Go variant
but the exact metamorphosis of Go from the plane (two-dimensional) into space (three-dimensional) to Go3³.

2. The Game:

Go3 becomes playable only through the representation of the act of metamorphosis.
A plane diagram consisting of 7 small boards with 7x7 intersecting lines each exists in addition to the space grid.
Each small board (two-dimensional) represents a plane of the room grid (three-dimensional 7x7x7 axes) above.
Go3 is played on the diagram and in the space grid at the same time. Therefore in each move and in each game the metamorphosis
from the plane into space takes place. Analogous to the images on the plane a sculpture emerges in the space grid which constantly changes
as the images on the plane do. But while the sculpture gets tighter and more and more confusing,
the diagram stays clear and the game stays in control.
